General Secretary EPBS. (Portugal)

Fernando Mendes entered the profession of Biomedical Science in 1994 at the Hospital Distrital da Figueira da Foz, working in the Blood Bank. After two years he transferred to Hospital St. André of Leiria for 13 months, working in the same field. After that, returned to HDFF where he worked until August 2008.

During his undergraduate studies he was elected President of the Students' Association. His main goal was to bring the Biomedical Science Education into Higher Education, working together with National Associations and Unions.This goal was achieved in 1993.

Fernando holds a Master Degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology, Faculty of Sciences and Technology , Honours Degree in Clinical Analysis and Public Health, College of Health Technology of Coimbra. Portuguese Honours Degree in Biomedical Science.

In 1999 was invited to join the Science Health and Technology Union (www.scts.pt).

During the same year he organized some lectures in Transfusion Medicine for Biomedical Scientists, Doctors, Nurses and others health professionals.

Since 2001 he has been a full member of the board of the SCTS and started working actively within the EPBS, first as observer, then was elected to the Student Forum as Student Facilitator.

In 2007 was President of the National Congress which was held in Figueira da Foz.

From 2002 to 2004 he was a teacher in Higher Education at the College of Health Technology of Porto, where he taught BioSafety and Clinical Chemistry.

In 2005 he was invited to become member of the Board of the National Association (www.aptac.pt).

Since September 2008 until today he is Professor Adjunto at College of Health Technology of Coimbra (www.estescoimbra.pt). Fernando is a PhD Student of Health Sciences of Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra

In 2004 Fernando was elected to the position of Director, a position he held until 2010. Currently he is the General Secretary of the Management Body of EPBS.

Fernando enjoys reading, listening to music (Bossa Nova), having fun with friends and family. Swimming is fundamental in is life and whenever he have the time like to do long walks with his red dog (Irish Setter) by the sea. Above all he enjoys making people happy and smiling.

He is familyaholic, workaholic and friendaholic.

The EPBS was formed in May 1999 at The Hague, Netherlands. This non profit organisation is committed to promoting best practice and ethics for Biomedical Laboratory Scientists throughout Europe.
It was officially registered in Brussels, Belgium in 2006 as an international non-profit association.

Membership is open to professional bodies committed to developing the skills and knowledge of the biomedical scientist in order to become an effective member of the health care team.

 

 

GGB meeting

The aims of the EPBS are to:

  • promote the maintenance of the highest possible standards of practice within biomedical science;
  • develop the ethical and professional values of the biomedical scientist;
  • support the training and education of the biomedical scientist in order to improve health care provision;
  • foster co-operation between member societies in areas of education, continuing professional development, competences and research;
  • liaise with EU Commission on all issues relevant to biomedical science;
  • utilise this shared knowledge between the societies to the benefit of all.

Member Associations nominate representatives to the General Governing body of the EPBS which meets annually Management of the EPBS is entrusted to the Management Body elected by the general Governing Body.
